Is translation a “career”? How can we find meaningful direction for our lives through our work? What’s the larger picture of our lives, and how does translation play a part? What makes us feel grounded, secure, confident and motivated to get up every morning? What are we afraid of? How can we contribute to society, our families, friends and peers through our work? Can we design a life doing translation in parallel with something else? Is translation a creative profession? How can we weave the work of translation into the story of our lives? What can we do to become the best at what we want to be?

In this talk, we’ll explore and discuss a wide range of philosophical questions about not just translation as a job or as a career, but the overarching story we want to write for our own lives. By looking at the examples and stories of the career paths taken by others, we uncover some practical ways we can find our own paths and “write our own stories,” and learn about the roles that translation might play within. We’ll also share the importance of developing genuine communication and friendships in this ever-changing world, with plenty of resources at the end to help you continue your unique journey.
